Hazel Lee of SF-Shanghai Association sets an example by raising money to help the Liu family to tide over difficulties

                Jessie Liu, aged 37, was hit by a car, speeding onto the sidewalk and got killed. The accident left behind her loved ones, including two young sons.  The news of Jessie Liu’s death has reverberated in the Chinese communities. Hazel Lee, founder of SF-Shanghai Association took the lead in raising money for Liu family on August 15. She hopes more people will join her in helping Liu family to tide over difficulties.

                Hazel Lee, who has resided in Portola area for 30 years, founded SF-Shanghai Association a few years ago.  She moved the headquarters of the organization to Portola area in order to make up for the lack of service organization in that community for Asian descents. SF-Shanghai Association has registered as a non-profit organization. 

                The Chinese language newspaper “World Journal” carried a report on Liu family on August 15. Many Chinese communities show sympathy to the suffering of Liu family. Gofundme.com/Jessie-Liu has seen donations pouring in for Liu family from many kind-hearted people.

Bill DeChung, the husband of Jessie Liu, thanks Hazel Lee and other personages from all circles for their help. Bill DeChung cannot help but recall their hard time in the past. As his mother passed away long time ago, he had to live with his father. After he got married, two sons were born. It was very difficult to find a place for the seven of them, including his parents-in-law, to live in.

                Before he and his wife made concerted efforts to buy the house in the Bay View District a few years ago, they used to rent rooms in the Portola area.  They had to change residence very often because the landlord wouldn’t rent the rooms to a big family with children for too long. 

                They had to rent two rooms, which were not big enough for them and some of them had to sleep on the floor. Bill DeChung says“Those were really hard days, but we pulled through. When our life just started to get better, my wife suddenly breathed her last. Now, we are having a tougher time than the days of poverty in the past.

                Most of the relatives and friends of Jessie Liu and Bill DeChung reside in Portola area and Bay View District. Their house is just a few blocks away from Portola area.

                SF-Shanghai Association is a non-profit organization. Contributions can be tax deductible. Hazel Lee says most of the residents in Portola area are new immigrants and the working class people. However, there are not many service organizations for them.  She would like to do a little bit for Liu family.

                Hazel Lee says although many members of SF-Shanghai Association are Chinese Americans whose ancestral homes were in Shanghai, the association serves all immigrants and returned students from China. Jessie Liu’s suffering grieves us in deed. We all should give Liu family a helping hand so that they can tide over difficulties.
